i dont know where to start. just put in a lot of miles this week, all solo, visiting accounts. hutch was outta range and well, the other half, well, theres been some communication breakdown. what to do while driving 200 miles a day, getting tired from working 12 hour days only to get to your hotel room and not be tired until 2 in the morning.. think, remmeber, rewind, and repeat... repeat... repeat. run on sentences...

to start with finishing last. now is finally past and we're on to the next small thing, detail oriented, left limitless and brash as ever. the words, contextual, never came out.... well, to pleasant. a life worth giving a damn about only to step on coat tails and washing the muck off in my own mouth. "holy, he holy"

short walks for some, long for others. id follow the neon light home if my legs could make it. moon rise, moon set and theres some planet following suit. i dont get it and the wonder keeps it interesting. knowing would ruin it all. i hate the term, but fabulous disaster. like some rock a billy bullshit band. shes down south east of here in the south west. im left, limping around trying to find all the pieces first before one can reassemble. one cast stone turned tidal waves... come crashing down on the beach the beach the beach.

red. this car drove me back and forth across the country countless times, i drove it in the ocean in long beach washington, it was somewhat a communal car when i moved to arizona the first time. broken into 13 times, hence the smashed out window, stolen once, backed into, see door panel, and smashed out radiator via an 8 foot long 4x4 piece of lumber going 80 miles an hour on the freeway... we'd been pulled over in Ajo arizona by border patrol, made it from indianapolis to austin texas mid winter with no heat or radio, and on and on and on...too many memories from too many mile. i put on 147,000 miles in this thing in 4 years and id do it again if i could.

long ago there was a crew of us skating the love bowls outside of phoenix in arizona. it was winter and the sun was out as it always is come that time of year. i cant remember exactly who all was there but... well.. "we" were all there.

now, to run into people that far out in the desert kinda says something about the life we led. scavengers, nomads, even homeless at times, skipping from one couch to another on a monthly basis.. anyhow, a car pulls up with outta state plates. we werent sure if we were getting the boot or if someone just wanted to see what we were doing and watch. the door opened and the first out of the car was adam alfaro who i had met several years earlier when he had just released his first black label part and swung thru santa cruz after signing on to the sessions clothing roster. see adam was ahead of his time kick flipping onto rails in the late 90s and we had the same hair sorta hair, so i guess we bonded over that complete ridiculousness... then chet childress, jason adams, jackson taylor, grant schubert, and jai tanju all climb out of the vehicle. it clicked and they were on a six-gun trip thru the southwest. half "star struck" but more stoked to see adam, we skated the love bowls with these guys and sorta started some small friendships. see, jai and jason started coming to arizona from time to time with enjoi and we would meet up when possible and roll around whatever park, dictch or street spot. chet ended up moving into my old room in a house in portland of which i moved back in the following summer, adam and i half kept in touch via brain waves and skating, and in travelling home, id run into jackson from time to time at the wilson skate park in chicago where he was living.

once again, today and a million miles later, i ran into jai and got a chance to catch up with him. we were never the closest of friends or kept up all that often, it was just more of that worldly skate-rat disease or the ill see you down the road in a few years connection. theres something to be said about how heavy skateboarding runs thru these veins.. something ill never lose sight of or take for granted. it feels good to run in to good people that you share something so heavy in common with and can lose an hour of time thinking about old times and new ones to come. speak of what was soooo important then and compare it to whats important now..

the worlds increasingly getting smaller and smaller as time slips ever faster thru these numb hands i have. life is good, even in tarnished time... heres two poloroids from winter 02/03 that jai shotof me. half dreads, pink grip, and 60mm wheels.

just about that time, key switched and everything charged, we rolled, mid morning, into the bright and bone barren desert. this day was 87 north bound for a bit and off on to some side roads, into everywhere we never knew existed. fifty miles in, with the car now near over heating, we pressed on. pressed on with windows wide rolled down entirely, the heater on high just to keep it cool, and the sun, blistering its way to the tarmac and crust and car. about 2500 feet up from sea level, she quit on us, gave out and started to steam. you, with your bathing suit top on, hood, trunk, and doors open, windows rolled down, kept your charm, smiled waved and waited as we were stuck on roadside waiting for the cool to come back. we climbed high and took photos of Red, our better half below. we were on our way to make more marks on our map and i remember. the map, the one thats so tightly folded into these memory banks, packed with such care in a box where nothing could ever happen to it. nothing because its deep with-in everything i know and as my memory fades due to unforeseen circumstances, the sound of every passing jet, now over head in san jose, makes me wonder...if i did, where we would be. tearing me up, draggin me down, wondering about wandering. winters short stints of days, drug on with lingering long shadows. only familiar due to missed memories. "if she gives up..." ...and billy knows the rest.

ripping session the other day in western phoenix... holidays means people usually come home to visit... wez came back from seattle, cody boat came to az from his current home in oregon... kinda like the band bein back together. i spent the last few years skating a ton with boat, wez and our other mia buddy mikey williams. i couldnt tell you how many people we had going, looked at, bailed and never skated.... life was good back then... lifes still good right now. its good to get out, jump over some fences and down in some holes. whats in the water never mattered. live frogs, dead cats, flocks of mosquitos, 5 flies 6 flies... god damn flies. cancer dust, cool deck, bull nose, pebble deck, lady finger, desert gem, paddock pools, master pools, on and on and on.

its funny, the mission that entails skating a backyard pool. peeking over fences in broad day light, neighbors have a dog? is it barking? is the house lived in? screw it, lets check it out closer and over the fence you go... any neighbors see us go over? is that helicopter for us? did you bring the buckets and towels? i forgot my board... everything that it takes to break into a house with out even touch the home... "tempe PD, what are you guys doing here?" "we're cleanin the pool for the owner." "so,,,you guys are supposed to be here?" "yea...west nile clean up." "what company do you work for?....wait, whose skateboards are those????"

we've been surrounded by swat teams, face down and cuffed with knees in our backs. in the back of cop cars, everything you can think of, but it never curtails the desire... the next pools gonna be better than the last, the search continues, the dream never dies. i cant even skate and anytime im in arizona, i still jump in the car and head out. i still bucket the pools and find some palm fran to use as a giant fan... the plasters perfect, the trannys not to tight, the copings killer, perfect death/light, no nozzles, rideable stairs, no in-wall ladder, the house has been gutted. this is us, this is all of us.

happy new years and all that... spent the day rolling around on the sporty thats been hibernating the last 4 months. i received two carbs, one from buddy jermey jones in slc ut and another from another old friend pat bleill in mentor ohio. between the two carbs i got and the one that i have on the bike, i think i pieced together a working one. thanks heaps you two... more than you can imagine... pretty ricky came over this morning and we went to 4 breakfast spots, all closed because of that desirable holiday called new years. we ended up at the staple food joint, Saturn. theyre liberal and therefore, there boss makes em work on holidays... liberal and greedy. thats besides the point... took us 2 hours to find an open food spot, see... pretty rickys vegan and that doesnt make eating at restaurants too easy... but hes pretty ricky.. so fine. lunch turned into a cruise around the oakland hills ending up at a driving range which you see here in these photos.. after rick did his thing, we took off and my bike sputtered out on top of one of the hills... quick u-turn, bike off and in neutral, we coasted a few miles down through the hills ending up somewhere near the berkeley vert ramp. keyed the bike on, hit the button and voila, back in action... headed to an ice cream spot for the last part of our date. on the way to get gas, some smart driver pulled out in front of us pretty bad, crossed over the center, left, right and into the parking lane... pinching me out a bit, skiddy stopped before we made contact, pulled it and headed home... heres my offerings of the day...

i hope to make things better and have this new year be the most progressive one ever..

over my time in arizona, i went to some pools with some old friends. one of which was hoss. in speaking with one of my best friends, i couldnt quite remember when or how hoss and i met... not to say he didnt stick out... but my memory is quickly fading due to scar tissue through out my brain... cognitive what... hoss is a ruler with more permission pools in one year than most anyone will ever get in their life... we got the green light...ahem, HE got the green light at a pool in tempe 7/8 years ago and he called me to do some foot work... if i remember right, it was a hot late spring day in tempe, probabl 100 degrees plus and on top of that, we were down in a white sun reflecting hole in the ground. no breeze, just sweat and a few feet of water to bail..

time served, we got the pool dried out and were too tired to really get in on the waves. needless to say, that started a long lasting friendship between him and i.

im continually impressed with with quite a few things about hoss. first and foremost, what started as only skating permission pools quickly turned to jumping fences with us,,, or more like us with him... even at the young age of 50 years old, hes not only keeping up, but more like surpassing everyone else. skating way into the darkness after sun down and always, i mean always, keeping his back foot in place... he skates unlike anyone else ive ever seen and i attribute it to him skating the dead cat pool in phoenix in 75... see. hes been skating pools as long as anyone and has photos and footage to prove it...

so this post, is and ode to hoss rogers, father, husband, homeowner, skateboarder silver smith and friend... heres a link to his website to see his work.

i dont write enough and as always, remember... this is for me, not you. my brain has holes in it, so i figure this will last until the first solar storm wipes out communication world wide and we all scramble and panic as computers, cell phones, credit card machines, nearly everything we idiots rely on for "quality of life" .... is gone. and hopefully our ability to write in run on after run on sentences will diminish too.

have you even gotten this far. if so, it doesnt get much more interesting than the intro really. a subpar story on a subpar night.

ive caught myself saying, recently, its been 5 years. its the last year ill be able to count em on one hand. im speaking to the last time i skated. thats right, here we go again. glory days, maybe. uninteresting, definitely. the other night, i set up a board. third brand new complete ive had in my life. its funny and embarassing at the same time. theres not a grind mark on either truck, the bushings are new, the wheels arent coned or yellowed, the board, not a scratch on it. my balance is gone, i cant walk in a straight line and touching the tip of my nose with my eyes closed is next to impossible. im waiting for the day i get pulled over for something gnarly enough to be asked to perform the drunk test... "officer, you gotta hear me out..." back to the main theme/load of shit. so, everytime i go to these work functions down in la, the crew i work with always ends up skating... im not too sure about the other departments... but i always borrow jay croft or steve infantes boards... they have set ups i like... i prefer these guys boards for different reasons.

jays board because i know how much pride he has in it. 1. i know its gonna be from ohio and 2, to him, its not just a skateboard. ive thought about his connection to skating and much like my thoughts (and with out asking him) i feel we are on the same page. a skateboard, my skateboard or his for that matter is a vessel. it gets you further than from the top of the stairs to the bottom or from one end of the pool to the other. its a transformation of time in some back roads sense. i feel, eventually, i would have gotten to many of the places that skateboarding took me... maybe it would have taken a life time or two with out a board, but onboard, it took only a few decades. jay will admit, he will stare at his board for hours just looking at its intricacies. i would do the same (but was always to embarassed to admit) simple things, like the cut of wheels. one brand compared to the next or the lines of trucks, amoeba-ish webbing, exposed axles to save weight as to kickflip better, higher, longer... i know a skateboard is 7 plies... but ive counted them on every single board i ever rode over the last 25 years. maybe hoping ill catch a company slipping or in some companies cases, overdoing it for their gnarlier riders. REAL, ahem, excuse me... did i say something.

for steves board, its similar to what i ride/rode (splitting hairs because what im able to do now, isnt what i consider "skating") his board, 8.125 (i think) was close to the 8.25 im conditioned to. i rode 60mm wheels, steves are bigger than most others, and the trucks are set up like i like em. loose rear truck with a looser front. its like a car folks... for those of you with tight trucks or worse,,, looser rear truck... i know its preference guys/girls, but ... really.. skateboarding is progression and innovation, so change up your kit.

all this text is really to combat a lack of photo uploads. ive had some pretty shitty computer luck as of late... rebooting a computer and .... i can make excuses all night. me idiot.

arizona is glowing and gold. good friends and family here. feels unreal to be so far off on those usual days. "if youre loved by someone youll never be rejected." times too far gone this go around but smiles persist. it seems heavy handed and full circle. begin again beginning again. this weeks proved concrete. been full of trains, cats, bikes, skateboards, storys of hoppin box cars over 10 dollar glasses of wine. odd looks and a little laughs are given and taken, pictured prizes and fleeting forevers. everythings fitting, tight and obnoxiously consistent. no, i cant believe it.
